The prerequisite for upgrading a teacher (accompanying a class over several years) is an entry in the field "Previous year's name" in the master data for the class. This determines the class to be used as starting point for the upgrade. Upgrading can be performed automatically at the change of the school year.

 

Navigate to "File | New School Year" and check the box "Automatically upgrade teacher".
